6 Upgrades to Improve Your Guest House

6 Ways to Improve Your Guest HouseYou’ve just been informed that friends and family are coming to town and staying in your home. You look back into your exterior yard and peer at your guest house. Maybe it’s dated, dirty, or out of trend. Whichever the case, most likely, it’s in need of some major TLC.

When it comes to renovations and redesigns, the majority of homeowners neglect their guest home. In many cases, it’s because guest houses are out of sight, meaning, they’re also out of mind.

It’s time to fix this out of sight, out of mind mentality. In this post, we’re sharing six upgrades you should make to your guest home. This list of to-dos will help your out-of-town visitors feel welcome, comfortable, and maybe even a little pampered in their new home away from home.

1. Create a welcoming entryway

One of the first things we recommend upgrading in your guest home is your entryway. Remodeling your entryway is a practical project to invest your money in because it’s one of the most high-traffic areas in your home. It’s also your first chance to show off your personal style and give your guests a preview of the designs they’ll see throughout the rest of your space.

Some design tips for creating an unforgettable entryway include:

In addition to these design elements, it’s also important to keep space in mind as well. For example, think of when your guests first arrive. Most likely, they’ll come in, gather at the entrance, and set their luggage down. Make sure you’re creating enough space for your guests to congregate without feeling overwhelmed. This means keeping your entryway clear and free from unnecessary clutter.

2. Think about flooring

Next, we suggest thinking about flooring. When it comes to flooring in your guest house, consider materials that are durable and easy to maintain. Durable flooring materials are crucial in your guest house. You may not be able to control, predict, or monitor everything that happens, including spills and other messes.

However, with reliable flooring materials that resist stains and are easy to clean, you don’t have to worry about various spills that may take place in your guest home. For example, looking at tile, wood tile, and laminate flooring materials is a great place to start.

3. Add storage and function

While redesigning your guest home, it’s important to not get too caught up in the aesthetics to the point you forget about the logistics. Even in the most professionally designed guest house, your company may not be able to enjoy their stay if they don’t have access to appropriate space and storage.

The quickest fix to this problem is to incorporate dressers, entertainment centers, and custom shelving in your space. However, if you don’t have enough room for these items, consider installing drawers underneath the bed your guests will be sleeping in.

4. Make your bath convenient

Next, make sure your bathroom is designed to be of convenience for your guests. There’s nothing worse than a disorganized bathroom—especially one that’s difficult to manage. Make sure you’re laying out your bathroom space in a way that’s easy for your guests to use.

For example, your company will need a place to put their toiletries so they’re easily accessible. Also, if you’re expecting more than one guest, your bathroom will need to accommodate for several individuals getting ready at once. If there’s currently not enough room for multiple people to get ready in your guest bathroom, you may consider decluttering your space or expanding it altogether.

5. Revamp the kitchen

If you’re anticipating that your guests stay for long durations, you may also consider installing a kitchen or renovating your current kitchen area, depending on its condition. Giving your guests a newly designed kitchen will give them a place to gather, cook, eat, and store items without having to rely on your eating schedule within the main house.

6. Get rid of your personal items

Finally, after all the large renovations are done, it’s time to decorate. Decorating is the ideal time to use your creativity. For example, if you’re inspired by modern elements, incorporate glass and stainless steel materials. Or, if the beach is your favorite location, consider decorating your guest house like a beach house. This step is all about making your space unique to your individual style.

However, during this process, avoid decorating your space with personalized items such as family portraits. Your main house is the perfect place to incorporate photos of your family. But, the guest house is not. We recommend keeping your guest house free of personalized items. That way, you can accommodate any type of guest you may have over, be it co-workers, friends, family, neighbors, etc.

Miscellaneous items to prep

Ideally, your large renovations will take place before you have any guests scheduled to visit. That way, all your projects will be done before your guests arrive.
However, after the big projects are done and before company comes to visit, there are a few miscellaneous items that you may want to have ready, including:
  • Clock with an easy to use alarm
  • Fresh linens
  • Empty hangers for the closet
  • Hair dryer
  • Internet access (and instructions if necessary)
  • Reading materials (your favorite book, magazine, etc.)
  • Tourist binder (what they should do, where they should eat, etc.)
  • Key to your house (depending on your comfort level)
  • Bottled water
  • Fresh flowers
  • Extra toiletries
These items aren’t necessarily needed, but will help your guests feel comfortable and at home during their stay.

Your next steps

With these items checked off your list, your guest house will be fully ready to embrace any visitors that may come your way.
