What to do with Your Spare Bedroom

what-to-do-with-your-spare-bedroom If you are one of the lucky souls to have a spare room in your home but are not sure what to do with that empty room, then you have come to the right place! We have worked in a large number of homes over the years, and have compiled a list of the five best ideas we’ve come across for your spare room. These ideas range dramatically in usage and purpose, so there is sure to be something for everyone, no matter what your interests entail.

5 Ideas for your Spare Room

From a playroom for the growing family, to the at-home gym for the young and active couple, we have our top five ideas for your spare room listed out, and paired with easy ways for you to turn that empty room into something purposeful!

Whether your young and growing family consists of three rowdy boys or one little princess, turning that spare room into a playroom is a great way to control messes throughout your home and provide your kids a space that they can call their own. You’ll have endless possibilities when it comes to designing and decorating a children’s playroom. While a lot will depend on the age of your children, as well as their interests, you can be as creative or straight forward as you want to be in a space like this. If you are looking to go the theme route, which so many kids love, here are some of our favorites!
  • Princess
  • Super heroes
  • Under the sea
  • Sports
  • Jungle
No matter which theme you choose, start by painting the walls in the room a fun and not too bright (believe us, if you go too bright, you’ll regret it later) color to match that theme. From there, begin deciding what types of furniture pieces, games and other accessories will best suit this playroom. If you are designing a playroom for older boys, think a big comfy couch with ample seating and a great view of the TV for video games. And don’t forget about storage for LEGO pieces and other fun toys your kids like playing with. Designing for younger girls? Try light pinks paired with white furniture. A small table and chairs will allow for your daughter and her friends to play tea-party, and a big oversized storage ottoman makes for the perfect dress-up storage center!

Home Office

The kids are out of the house and away at college, and you are left with an extra bedroom, unsure what to do with it. Why not turn it into something practical and long lasting, like a home office? Every home can use an office, even if no one works from home. Home offices require very little design effort, and can often be furnished with pieces found throughout your existing home. A large desk, comfy desk chair, ample storage and possible additional seating are all that you need to create the perfect home office.
Think light colors and natural light when it comes to designing this type of space. Be sure to take a look at this article for even more detailed tips on what every home office needs.

Not totally into the idea of a complete home office, but still want a quiet, relaxing and organized place to enjoy and put your feet up in? An at-home library is the perfect choice! You don’t need to have dozens of books to design an at-home library. In fact, you can have all of your books on the iPad or Kindle for that matter, and still design yourself a library. The key to designing a practical library is making sure that no matter what time of day, you are able to comfortably enjoy the space and read in it. This means you’ll need two important things:
  1. Ample lighting
  2. Comfortable seating
Ample lighting should be a given. You simply cannot read if it’s dark, easy as that! However, while floor lamps, table lamps, sconces and hanging lights are required for nighttime reading, natural light is the best source (both for comfort and for your eyes) to read in during the day. Make sure that your windows are properly dressed and that you have complete control over how much light comes in, including the angle at which the light enters the space! You don’t want to have to completely move into a new position just because the sun shifts and you are suddenly blinded. Shutters or blinds are a great solution to this common problem.
Comfortable seating is the second requirement for any at-home library. You’ll want to be able to sit and lie down in a variety of positions, and still be able to comfortably read your book or magazine. We recommend going with a sofa or loveseat that is set across from two upholstered chairs, all placed around an ottoman coffee table! This will allow you to have a number of seating options, all comfy and cozy, perfect for reading.

Okay, the kids are out of the house, but you aren’t too into reading and “relaxing.” If your idea of relaxing is staying active and keeping in shape, then an at-home gym is the perfect idea to transform your spare bedroom into! Depending on the size of the space, you’ll be able to fit anything from a treadmill and elliptical, to a few weights and a bike machine. The most important design element of an at-home gym is the flooring. You’re going to want something that is soft enough to lay on for sit-ups and yoga poses, but hard enough to set heavy gym equipment onto, and balance on while doing your yoga stretching poses. We recommend going with short and protective carpeting or a strong and durable laminate. Both options have their pros and cons, and the final choice will really depend on the type of exercises you plan on using your new gym for!

Movie Room

If you are not a huge fan of reading or exercise, don’t worry. You are not alone! But that doesn’t really help you out now does it; you are still left with this spare bedroom that you don’t know what to do with. How about making it into a movie room? To make the perfect movie room, all you need is:
  • Media center with a big TV (the bigger the better)
  • Storage for movies, a cable box, DVD or Blu-Ray play and video games
  • Lots of seating
  • Dark and controllable window treatments
  • Carpeted floors
Some items on this list are a no brainer: a media center, storage and seating are true requirements for any movie room. However, specific window treatments and carpeted flooring are not always at the forefront of the designers mind when designing a movie room, but let us tell you, if you follow our advice, you’ll be much happier with your final product. Having complete control over your window treatments allows you to ensure no glare is ever on your screen. A movie room is great until you can’t see what is on the screen due to an over-powering glare. Secondly, we suggest carpeted flooring. We added carpeting to the list for two key reasons.
  1. Carpeting is a great sound blocker. You’ll be able to have your movie turned up louder without having to worry about annoying the rest of the family if you choose carpeting. Don’t forget about surround sound. If that is a contender for your movie room, sound blocking carpeting is definitely the way to go.
  2. If you have young kids in the house, sleepovers are likely plentiful, and let’s face it, the majority of kids end up sleeping on the ground. If your home has a movie room, that may be the number one room choice for these sleepovers. It’s a simple change that can have a large impact on the space! Carpet is much more enjoyable for kids to sleep on than hardwood or tile.
