In this article, we’re go over everything you need to know about Airo soft flooring, including the top five benefits Airo has over traditional carpet. That way, you can make an informed decision about whether Airo is right for your home.

What is Airo?

Airo is a soft flooring manufactured by Mohawk in partnership with DSM-Niaga, a sustainability firm from the Netherlands. Made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate fiber, or PET fiber, Airo is constructed using an innovative, tension-free process. This process allows Airo to never wrinkle or bend, even in high humidity. Unlike traditional carpet that requires a separate cushion, Airo has an integrated felt pad that effectively softens every step.

How is Airo different from traditional carpet?

Traditional carpet is often difficult and labor intensive to install, and is usually not recommended for people with allergies as the material can trap dust, dirt, mold, and mildew underneath its surface. Additionally, cleaning carpet effectively involves hiring a professional or using a cumbersome carpet cleaner. Carpet is also prone to stains and harboring bad odors. On the other hand, with its unique construction and innovative design, Airo eliminates these common problems, making it an ideal choice for anyone considering a flooring renovation.

The benefits of Airo flooring

While there are many pros to this new material, here what we consider to be the top five benefits of Airo flooring:
  • Easy installation
  • No damage to original flooring
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Easy to clean
  • Environmentally friendly

Easy installation

Installing traditional carpet can be an expensive and time-intensive process. Airo lays flat as soon as its unfolded and can be easily attached to a rooms perimeter using double-sided tape. This removes the need for power stretchers, seam sealers, seaming irons, and other difficult tools. Airo’s flat construction allows it to easily adhere to areas that carpet may not easily fit—including balusters, staircases, corners, and more. Airo flooring can be installed in five easy steps:
    1. Place double-sided tape or adhesive around the rooms perimeter.
    2. Unfold and lay Airo in the room, making sure the measurements are exact.
    3. Trim any excess material using a straight edge blade.
    4. Apply pressure to stick Airo to the double-sided tape or adhesive.
    5. Enjoy your new flooring!
Everyone from home project veterans to inexperienced DIYers will find that Airo is quick, easy, and painless to install. But don’t just take out word for it—check out this video showing just how easy it is to install Airo.

No damage to original flooring

For many homeowners, the decision to install carpet over original flooring like hardwood or laminate is a difficult one, because carpet often damages the original flooring. Airo’s integrated felt pad helps eliminate the potential for any damage to the original flooring. This makes Airo an ideal solution for those who like to change their flooring often or want to preserve their original flooring, without having to worry about the damage that typically comes from carpet.

Hypoallergenic

Carpet is typically not recommended to homeowners with allergies because of its ability to trap odors, moisture, and allergens within its fibers. However, the fibers in Airo flooring are designed not to absorb any moisture, eliminating the potential for mold and mildew to grow. The unique construction of Airo provides better airflow than traditional carpet, allowing dust and dirt to be released rather than being trapped. Allergens like dust, dirt, and pet hair are easily removed through vacuuming.

Easy to clean

Cleaning traditional carpet can be expensive and may involve renting equipment or hiring a professional. With Airo, you’ll save the time and money you would’ve spent on an annual carpet cleaning. because of Airo’s inherent stain resistance and ability to keep dirt from getting trapped. Airo is ideal for homes with children or pets due to its natural stain resistance. Since Airo’s fibers don’t absorb moisture, spills and messes are easily removed without labor-intensive carpet cleaners. Airo is also made without latex. This eliminates the dreaded “new carpet smell” and allows dust and dirt to be removed with vacuuming rather than being trapped under the surface of the flooring. This also eliminates potential odors from cooking and other household activities that often get trapped in carpet.

Environmentally friendly

If you’re looking to go green, having Airo installed in your home is the smart choice for the environment. Airo is made from 100% recyclable materials. These materials won’t take up space in a landfill, unlike traditional carpet, which is made of materials that can’t be recycled. Airo is also exceptionally durable—it can stand up to damage in high traffic areas of your home for many years, eliminating the potential waste of replacing your flooring annually or semi-annually.

How Airo helps air quality

Airo is free of latex and volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Not only does this eliminate odors, it also prevents harmful chemicals from being released into the air. Volatile organic compounds are gasses emitted from certain solids or liquids that can cause negative health impacts if inhaled. The most common source of VOCs in carpet comes from latex backing and adhesives. Since Airo is free of latex, you and your family can breathe easy knowing you’re not being exposure to harmful chemicals.
