How to Use Natural Stone in Your Outdoor Shower

Natural stone outdoor showerAn outdoor shower can be a luxury addition to your yard. Gone are the days where outdoor showers only consisted of a spout attached to the walls of your home, with no added amenities. Today, outdoor showers can embody spa-like elegance and provide an opportunity for relaxation in opulent surroundings. An outdoor shower is the perfect place to start or end your day, as well as to rinse off after a summertime dip in the pool. When it comes to designing your outdoor shower, there’s no better choice than the versatility and unique beauty of natural stone. Whether you incorporate natural stone in the walls of the shower itself, or use it for extra details, the results are sure to be unique and reflect your personal style. With a little planning and effort, you’ll be well on your way to having a convenient and attractive outdoor shower that you can enjoy all summer long.

Brainstorm a theme

Outdoor showers are a great addition to any backyard or outdoor space, due to their ability to fit into any theme. Simple and minimalistic showers are perfect for a yard that’s not looking to make a statement, while an eye-catching and luxurious shower can serve as a main focal point of a sprawling backyard masterpiece. Once you’ve decided on a theme, look for natural stones that fit within it. A sleek and dark colored stone like slate can help your shower feel modern and futuristic, while a rustic colored stone like travertine can invoke the feeling of the rugged Southwest.

Find your flooring

No one wants to stand in mud, wet grass, or uncomfortable rocks while using an outdoor shower. Slip and temperature resistant paving stones are an ideal choice for the flooring. Travertine absorbs water instantly, and remains cool to the touch so you won’t burn your feet in the shower on hot days. Stones such as marble are notoriously slippery, while the natural stone pavers that make up flagstone are known to hold heat. Both options may not be the best choice in terms of safety and comfort. If you choose a porous stone, such as granite, marble, or limestone, it’s important to have it sealed before installation. This will prevent the development of mold, mildew, and other consequences of moisture accumulating in the stone. Additionally, sealing the stone makes it easier to clean, as soap scum and dirt won’t be able to settle into the grooves and holes of the stone’s surface.

Accessorize with amenities

Once you’ve designed your outdoor shower, add fixtures and features to enhance your experience. Consider adding a sink, dressing area, bench, shelves, or other amenities to make the space your own. Natural stone can be used to either build these amenities or serve as accenting elements.

Build privacy walls

Walls are a necessary feature for any outdoor shower—after all, you’ll need a way to conceal yourself from the outside world, and to protect your shower from outside elements. A wall can also serve as an accent piece to showcase brick, natural stone, concrete, or other details.

This wall forms the base of the shower and houses the shower head and fixtures. The rustic and aged stone contrasts well with the smooth concrete half-walls that it connects to.

Coordinate with landscaping

Your outdoor shower should mesh well with the rest of the landscaping and other design elements in your yard. Your yard should remain as one cohesive design instead of having the shower stand out and disrupt the visual unity of the space. If your yard isn’t already landscaped, plan your landscaping around the design of your shower. Stones like sandstone or limestone contribute a beachy landscaping motif, complete with palm trees and brightly colored flowers, while stones like granite are perfect for a lavish backyard with lush green details.

Lush tropical plants create a gorgeous tropic setting in this back yard. The outdoor shower fits into the theme with an intricate chopped stone slab wall and exposed gravel rock floor.

Think outside the box

There’s no one right design when it comes to an outdoor shower. You can customize the experience however you want, and even forget the outdoor elements all together. In fact, you can get many of the same benefits associated with an outdoor shower without having to fully commit to one.

While this shower is located indoors, a large window provides a clear look to the beautifully landscaped backyard, allowing you to feel like you’re outdoors while enjoying indoor comforts.

For a unique twist, this bathroom features glass doors that open to an enclosed outdoor shower complete with lava rock walls, tropical plants, and natural stone pavers to transport you into a tropical oasis.

How to keep your shower clean

An outdoor shower is an investment—make sure you get the most bang for your buck by keeping the shower in good condition. Non-porous natural stones only need to be wiped down with a clean cloth and water or a mild soap, as they are already sealed from bacteria and debris seeping in to the stone.  Stones that are porous should be re-sealed annually, to prevent the growth of bacteria. Abrasive cleaners, such as those containing ammonia, vinegar, or lemon juice, should generally not be used on your shower, as they can damage the stone and cause it to become dull over time. However, small amounts of ammonia can be used on particularly stubborn stains or buildup.
